Hanukkah begins on the evening of Sunday, December 14, 2025, and ends on Monday, December 22, 2025.

The menorah, which we light each night of Hanukkah, has space for eight candles, plus a pilot candle called the shamash. Each night we add one candle, and by the last night, all the flames are lit.

You can place your menorah in a window or door frame so that many people can see it.

The best time to light the candles is at dusk. Fill your menorah with enough oil or use large candles that will last half an hour after dark (or if you light them after dark, they should last at least half an hour).

On the first night, place a candle on the far right of the menorah. The next night, add a second candle to its left, and so on, adding one each night of Hanukkah—moving from right to left.

This is how it should be turned on:

Take the lit shamash candle in your right hand (unless you are left-handed) and recite standing:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱ-לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר חֲנֻכָּה

Blessed are You, G-d our Lord, King of Universe, Who has sanctified us with His precepts and commanded us to light the Hanukkah candle

The first night you turn on in the year, add:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱ-לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לִזְּמַן הַזֶּה

Blessed are You, G-d our Lord, King of the Universe, Who granted us life,
He sustained us and made us reach
the present occasion.

Each night, light the new candle first (the one furthest to the left) and continue lighting them from left to right.

An important detail: On Friday afternoon, light the menorah with enough oil or large candles before lighting the Shabbat candles, 18 minutes before sunset. And wait until after nightfall to light them the following night.

Once all the candles are lit, sit down to tell a Hanukkah story, eat some traditional snacks, give Hanukkah money (Hanukkah gelt), and immerse yourself in the Hanukkah atmosphere. Even better, take a picture and upload it to your social media to inspire your friends to do the same.

La Menorá, que encendemos cada noche de Janucá tiene lugar para 8 velas, y una vela piloto, llamada Shamash. Cada noche agregamos una vela y para la última noche todas las llamas están encendidas.

Puedes poner tu Menorá en el marco de la ventana o de la puerta, para que mucha gente pueda verla.

El mejor momento para encender las velas es cuando está anocheciendo. Llena tu menorá con suficiente aceite o con velas grandes que duren media hora después del anochecer (o si enciendes después del anochecer que dure por lo menos media hora)

La primera noche, coloca una vela en el extremo derecho de la Menorá. La próxima noche, agrega una segunda llama a su izquierda, y así agrega una cada noche de Janucá – moviéndose de derecha a izquierda.

Así se debe encender:

Toma la vela shamash encendida en tu mano derecha (salvo que seas zurdo) y recita de pie:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱ-לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לְהַדְלִיק נֵר חֲנֻכָּה

Bendito eres Tú, Di-s nuestro Señor, Rey del Universo, Quien nos ha santificado con Sus preceptos y nos ha ordenado encender la vela de Janucá

La primera noche que enciendes en el año, se agrega:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יי אֱ-לֹהֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם שֶׁהֶחֱיָנוּ וְקִיְּמָנוּ וְהִגִּיעָנוּ לִזְּמַן הַזֶּה

Bendito eres Tú, Di-s nuestro Señor, Rey del Universo, Quien nos otorgó vida,
nos sustentó y nos hizo llegar hasta
la presente ocasión.

Cada noche, enciende la nueva vela primero (la que este más a la izquierda) y continúa encendiendo de izquierda a derecha.

Un detalle importante: El viernes por la tarde, enciende la Menorá con suficiente aceite o velas grandes antes de encender las velas de Shabat, 18 minutos antes del atardecer. Y espera hasta después de la salida de las estrellas para encenderlas la próxima noche.

Una vez que están todas las llamas encendidas, siéntate a contar una historia de Janucá, come algún bocadillo típico, regala dinero de Janucá – Janucá guelt – y sumérgete en la atmosfera de Janucá. Mejor aún si te sacas una foto y la subes a tus redes sociales para inspirar a tus amigos a hacer lo mismo.
