The 10th of Tevet is the anniversary of the siege of Jerusalem that led, 30 months later, to the destruction of the Temple. On this day, Jews around the world fast and mourn its destruction and pray for its rebuilding.
On the 10th of Tevet in the Jewish year 3336 (425 BCE), the armies of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon besieged the walls of Jerusalem, eventually breaching the walls that protected the holy city, destroying the Temple, and sending the Jewish people into exile.
Each year, we observe the 10th of Tevet as a day of fasting, repentance, and return—a day dedicated to safeguarding the walls of our identity, repairing their breaches, and ensuring that their gates function properly.
