A brief history of the Synagogue
Comunidad Israelita de Alicante
The Comunidad Israelita de Alicante was founded in the year 1972 in the city of Alicante. At that time, the Community did not have its own synagogue and it was only possible to hold services on the High Holy Days in a rented hotel meeting room in Alicante.
Our synagogue, dedicated in memory of Don Alberto Cohen was inaugurated on 27 February 1987, and furnished by donations received from members of the community. Its use was gifted by the Cohen family until the Community purchased it, together with the adjoining locale in 2006, when it was enlarged to include a new Social/Cultural Centre and completely refurbished.
Our Community serves the Jewish people residing in, or visiting the Costa Blanca area. Its membership is spread from as far away as Gandia in the North to Torrevieja in the South, and is composed of several different nationalities.
Our Jewish Cemetery was opened in November 1993, and is located within the main Benidorm cemetery on a plot of land that was donated to the Community by the Benidorm Council.
We conduct regular Friday evening Shabbat services followed by a Kiddush Table generously provided by the ladies of the Community.
The Community welcomes Jewish and non-Jewish visitors to the synagogue, provided they have made prior arrangements through the President or Secretary. Contact details and a full programme of our religious and social events are provided on our website.
